The stranger looked on her, and putting his hand into his pocket, presented her with a couple of livres.

Marian was overpowered by his kindness; the tear of gratitude started to her eye; she would have thanked him, but found it impossible. Seizing his hands, she pressed it to her lips with enthusiasm, then rushing down a narrow street, sought her lodging, buoyed with the hope of being able to save her child; but, alas! she was too late, for he, poor babe, was fast sinking to the grave; the cold damps of death stood upon its infant brow; and while its unhappy mother moistened its feverish lips with cordial, (obtained by the means of the stranger’s charitable donation), their livid hue too surely convinced he was breathing his last.

In a state of distraction she snatched up a pen, and addressed the following words to the villain who had brought her to this deplorable situation:—
